PAINT PLOT AUSTRALIA: MEET PHOEBE DUNN, THE ARTIST WHO CREATED THE UPSIDE-DOWN GIRAFFE PAINT BY NUMBERS KIT

Given what’s happening in the world at the moment, we felt like it was more important than ever to introduce you to local artists who inspire us and have helped us to create paint by numbers kits for adults.

We’d like to introduce you to one of our talented artists, Phoebe Dunn who is based in Melbourne. Phoebe created two of the kits available on Paint Plot Australia, “The Upside-Down Giraffe” and “The Colourful Giraffe”.

Phoebe is inspired by colour and spontaneity.

Her favourite artists are those who ‘paint outside the lines’, like mural and street artists and Vincent Van Gogh because of his ability to keep experimenting throughout his life.

  1. Phoebe, can you please tell us a little about yourself?

I am creative and quirky by nature. I’ve always love being surrounded by colour and taking the time out for a good cup of tea.

  1. What or who inspires your artwork?

Mural and Street artists inspire me, they always use striking colours to make their art pop off the wall and are very creative with the size and space that they work on.

  1. We just love the Upside-Down Giraffe, do you have a favourite animal?

I would say dogs as I've always grown up with dogs and just love their multiple personalities.

  1. Do you like to paint and if so, what is your most important tool when you’re painting?

Yes I love to paint and always try to find time for it in this busy life. My most important tool would be white paint, I know that sounds a bit weird but you can build with white paint and add it to other colours to get different shades or a marble effect, it’s also great to do highlights to add that bit extra.

  1. What’s your favourite artwork?

Whenever I am in the Melbourne City and able to visit the NGV, I always go straight to 'The Banquet of Cleopatra' by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. This larger than life painting has so much detail in every corner, something new can be seen every visit, the story behind it is intriguing and the fact it’s painted as the wrong era is very unusual and different.

  1. What’s the best piece of advice that you have been given?

Take time for you, everything can feel rushed and overwhelming but remind yourself you are okay and you are safe.  Do something that you enjoy for the sake of feeling good.

  1. Who are you favourite artists?

Vincent Van Gogh has always been a consistent favourite based on his experimentation throughout his life and play of colour, layers and perspectives.

Other local artist would be Kelly Thompson with her delicate feminine illustrations & Gemma O'Brien for her crazy patterns and typography.

  1. Finally what is the best piece of advice that you could give our customers who are starting to paint your giraffes?

Always start with the background and work your way to the layers that would be onto such as the eyes and patches. This way the top and last layers can be done with clean lines and overlap so there is no paper showing through. Also feel free to change it, different colours or scenery in the background, experimentation is half the fun.
